Lag B’Omer – A Celebration of Respect & Belonging
Lag B’Omer, the 33rd day of the Omer, is a joyful pause during the time of mourning between the holidays of Pesach and Shavuot. When we count the 49 days of the Omer, we recall the tragic loss of 24,000 students of Rabbi Akiva, who perished in a devastating plague. The Talmud teaches that this plague was not merely a physical affliction, but a spiritual consequence of the students’ failure to treat one another with kavod, or respect. Lag B’Omer marks the day the plague ended – the turning point from mourning to hope and from isolation to renewed connection. Lag B’Omer is also the yahrzeit of Rav Shimon Bar Yochai, the great sage and mystic who revealed deep spiritual truths through the teachings of the Zohar. Bonfires are lit in his honor, symbolizing the light of Torah and spiritual wisdom he brought into the world.
This timeless lesson about the importance of respect speaks directly to how we engage with individuals with disabilities in our communities. Kavod habriyot, honoring the dignity of every person, calls on us to see beyond limitations and to recognize the inherent worth and potential of each individual, who brings their own unique light into this world. Inclusion and belonging are not merely about access; they are about creating environments where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered to participate fully. When we cultivate a community of belonging, we affirm that each person has something essential to contribute to our shared Jewish life, and today, more than ever, that Achdut – unity – is critical.
As we light bonfires and gather for joyous celebrations on Lag B’Omer, let us recommit to building a Jewish community rooted in compassion and respect. May we learn from the past and shape a future where no one is excluded or invisible, and where everyone can live with dignity and respect. In doing so, we strengthen the fabric of our community and recognize the essential place of every individual within Klal Yisrael.
With Best Wishes for a Joyous Lag B’Omer,
