Hope Against the Darkness – One People, One Light
Dear Friends,
It feels like we are living in dark times, shaken by violence and hatred. The terrorist attack against Jews in Australia celebrating the first night of Chanukah on Bondi Beach and the continued rise of antisemitism around the world leave many of us feeling vulnerable, unsettled, and questioning our safety. The darkness can feel overwhelming, close, and deeply personal. We pray for a refuah sheleyma, a speedy and complete recovery, for those wounded in the attack, and for comfort for those who are grieving.
Yet it is precisely at times like these that the light of Chanukah matters most. Chanukah reminds us of the courage of the few against the mighty and of the Jews who refused to surrender their values, even when the situation seemed insurmountable. It teaches us about the miracle of the oil, enough for one day that burned for eight, showing that hope can endure far beyond what logic would suggest. Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, z”l, reminds us that “Chanukah is the festival of light, but the light it celebrates is the light of hope.” That hope is sustained when we remember that we are Am Echad B’lev Echad, One People with One Heart. Our strength has never come from numbers alone, but from unity, shared purpose, and an unwavering commitment to one another. When we stand together and refuse to let fear divide us, our collective light grows brighter and more powerful. Each flame we kindle is a declaration that despair will not have the final word.
At Libenu, we see this truth every day through individuals with disabilities who demonstrate extraordinary strength, resilience, and perseverance in the face of daily challenges. Their lives remind us that true courage is often quiet, steady, and rooted in compassion and love. By creating a community of belonging, dignity, and care, we help that light shine even brighter. This Chanukah, may we each add our own light through kindness and inclusion until the darkness is pushed back and our unity illuminates the way forward. Am Yisroel Chai.
Wishing you a joyous Chanukah,
Shana Erenberg, CEO

Libenu’s Annual Lev Respite Chanukah Party
An Evening of Community and Joy!
Libenu’s annual Lev Respite Chanukah party was a night to remember, filled with warmth, love, and community. Over 175 family members and friends came together for an evening filled with light and joy. The highlight of the evening was the beautiful Chanukah play performed by the respite children, who had a chance to shine onstage as parents watched with happiness and pride. A beautiful video showcasing Libenu’s impactful respite programs – Lev After-School, Lev Lilah, and Camp Lev – was met with smiles and applause. Guests enjoyed delicious pizza, crispy latkes, and sweet sufganiot, and each family left with festively wrapped gifts that brought excitement and happiness to the children. The warmth of the evening, the sense of belonging, and unity truly embodied the spirit of Chanukah and Libenu.
Heartfelt thanks to all of the respite staff and volunteers who went above and beyond to make the evening a great success. Yasher Koach to Rivka Schaffel, Supervisor of the Lev Respite programs, whose passion and tireless efforts make the magic happen every day. Thank you to Dina Baker, Libenu’s Director of Residential Services, and Kaley Cohen, Director of Quality Assurance, for your invaluable assistance. We are also immensely grateful to JCFS for their generous donation of the Chanukah presents that made our children feel cherished and loved. Together, you created a night filled with the true light and joy of Chanukah!
