Ma Nishtana – The Power of a Question

In just a few days we will gather with family and friends to celebrate Pesach, reading from the Haggadah to bring the story of our redemption and freedom to life. The youngest child at the Seder will stand up, and with some encouragement ask the Ma Nishtana, the Four Questions, that begin with “Why is this night different from all other nights?” We will explain that on this night we remember our past as a unique Jewish people—the suffering of our ancestors, the miracles performed by Hashem, and the extraordinary journey from slavery to freedom. We recall not only their pain, but their strength—the resilience that carried them through generations of hardship and sustained them with hope.

The Ma Nishtana reminds us that questioning is essential to learning and growth. It’s how we transmit the past to future generations. It enables us to ask boldly, listen carefully, and engage deeply. This night is different because it encourages dialogue; and from dialogue comes understanding, from understanding comes empathy, and from empathy comes community. When we come together to ask, learn, and share, we build achdut – unity, which the Jewish people have relied on throughout history to endure, to rise, and to move forward.

At Libenu, we see firsthand how asking the right questions can spark transformative change. Families ask us how to ensure their loved ones with disabilities can live full, meaningful lives. Communities ask us how to create spaces of true belonging, while individuals ask how they can be part of the solution. These questions matter. They inspire us to take action to foster independence, nurture dignity, and cultivate a community that draws strength from its kindness.

Let’s make this night—and everyday hereafter—different by continuing to ask ourselves essential questions: How can we be more inclusive? How can we authentically support one another with dignity and compassion? How do we build a community where no one is overlooked or excluded? At Libenu, we understand the answers to these questions begin with recognizing each person’s inherent strengths and potential, and committing ourselves to values rooted in inclusion, belonging, and love.

May we all continue to have the passion to question, the strength to take meaningful action, and the vision to create a community in which everyone genuinely matters.

From all of us at Libenu, we wish you a Chag Sameach – Happy Passover!

Update: Lev Avigayil

Exciting things are on the horizon! Plans are underway for Libenu’s new Lev Avigayil, a permanent home for our wonderful Lev respite programs. This warm and welcoming space in the heart of the community will offer individuals with disabilities a supportive environment in which to play, socialize, and thrive while giving their families a much-needed break. Here’s a sneak peek at the future—a place built with intention, care, and love, where every individual is embraced, valued, and cherished.
