For Such a Time as This
Dear Friends,
Purim is a holiday of hidden miracles and the triumph of courage over fear. It tells the story of the Jewish people on the brink of destruction, facing the evil decree of Haman, who sought to annihilate them. But in the shadows of uncertainty, a hero emerged—not a warrior or a king, but a young Jewish woman named Esther, chosen by Achashverosh to be the queen of Persia.
When Esther first learned of Haman’s plans, she hesitated to act. She felt powerless and alone—Haman had money and influence while Esther was kept in isolation from her community. Yet, her uncle Mordechai reminded her: “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place… And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14), and she acted. With courage, Esther risked everything, speaking up for her people who rallied behind her, fasting and praying in unity. With Hashem’s help and the strength of the community behind her, Esther was able to foil Haman’s plans and save the Jewish people.
Purim is not just about the past; it is about how we live today and the power of achdut – unity. It reminds us that we are all part of a greater story, and that true strength lies in standing together. We fulfill the mitzvot of mishloach manot, sending gifts of food to friends, and matanot l’evyonim, giving to those in need, because a strong community is one where no one is forgotten. This is the essence of inclusion—not just inviting everyone to the celebration, but making sure that every person, including those with disabilities, has a meaningful place in the community. Every individual, regardless of ability, has something valuable to contribute.
Above all, Purim teaches us never to lose hope. Even when Hashem’s presence seems hidden – as it is in the Megillah – even when the world feels uncertain, miracles can unfold in the most unexpected ways. The Jewish people have faced adversity throughout history, yet we have always emerged stronger together. As we celebrate Purim with joy, laughter, and song, let us remember that we, too, are here for such a time as this. This Purim, may we draw strength from our community to discover and embrace our purpose. May we open our hearts so that every individual, regardless of ability, is valued, because when we stand together, nothing can break us.
With best wishes for a Chag Purim Sameach,
